This week I finally got chance to go to Hawksmoor - a somewhat nirvana for steak lovers. Not your average romantic valentine's meal - but right up my street!
We went to the Spitalfield's one, as it's right by my new office, and started with a cocktail each at the bar before we were seated.
For those who haven't been, the atmosphere was so perfect for a cosy romantic night - candlelit and rustic with exposed brick and wooden floors. We chose one of the larger cuts from the blackboard (which are scrubbed off once they've been sold) and plumped for a 800g porterhouse to share (one side fillet, one side sirlion, cooked on the bone for maximum flavour!)
The meat arrived with the bone, but thickly sliced in a pan and was accompanied by thrice-cooked chips in little pots, full bottles of ketchup and mustard. Unfortunately my hunk o' junk of a phone doesn't do it justice...
The meat was so perfectly cooked and delicious - I usually order my steak medium-rare because I like it pink but without the blood oozing out, but this time we went for rare and it was just right!
If we weren't on a budget we would probably have gone for another round it was so good (but for £68 for 800g we just couldn't justify it!!).
The staff were so friendly and knowledgeable and were more than happy to offer advice about the flavour and style of each cut, so if you're not sure what to go for, just ask!
I would happily go back any day, but I would recommend leaving it for a special occasion if you're not particularly flush right now! This is the start of a monthly steak night for us...next stop Abbey Tavern in Kentish Town...I've heard it's really great, and a bit better for the wallet!!
