Maltby Street Market

Yesterday I caught up with my friend Georgia and her boyfriend and took a trip to Maltby Street Market.

It was a chilly day but that minor detail couldn't tear us away from the goodies we heard were on offer at this lesser-known street food market near Bermondsey. Like this smoked salmon cut almost as thick as the bread it was served on!

Just £3 for all this! Such a bargainous start.

Maltby Street is home to the likes of St Johns Bakery, also in Spitalfields, which serve the best bacon sandwich you will ever eat, as well as Phatbreads, Herman ze German and Craft Coffee.

Concentrated down one tiny alleyway, this market is a mix of in-situ cafés and vintage/thrift stores, and more open pop-up market stands. The smells and sounds of sizzling stoves fill the air and even on a cloudy day the place was packed. Some people were taking their time, others just popped in to pick-up lunch.

Early on I was drawn to Band of Bandits Jerky which is just starting out. I LOVE beef jerky so had to try out their flavoured fare.

Teriyaki was the best....I filled a bag to take home.

The best of the day was definitely this beauty though....beetroot purée with goats cheese, avocado and balsamic on sourdough from The Avocado Cafe.

Just look at her...

I never can resist a scotch egg either

After picking our way through the savoury delights it was on to the sweet in the form of these truffles from Dark Sugars

We went for a few Gin & Lime, as well as a chocolate 'Sea Salt' Bomb which melted in the mouth.

After a few hours even all that eating couldn't warm us up so we wandered back into Bermondsey to seek warmth in The Woolpack on Bermondsey Street.

Maltby Street is open Saturdays 9am-4pm and Sunday 11am-4pm and is well worth a look for a nice wander around, or for a spot of lunch and I would definitely recommend it over some of the larger more touristy street food markets in London!

Enjoy!
