Tea & Cake

Sometime there's just nothing better than tea and cake, in front of the fire on a cold Sunday afternoon. This cake is really just a simple sponge but in the words of someone close to me "it's not a cake unless it's fun to make" so we decided to get a bit creative with some food colouring.

To make yours you will need:

175g self raising flour
175g butter
175g caster sugar
3 eggs
food colouring

For the buttercream icing:

125g butter
225g icing sugar
2tbsp of milk

1. Beat the butter and the sugar together in a large bowl
2. Add the eggs and beat evenly
3. Fold in the flour until smooth
4. Split the mixture into two bowls, then add food colouring to one bowl and mix evenly
5. Dollop the white mixture and the black mixture alternately in 2 greased sandwich tins then swirl
6. Bake for 20 mins in a pre-heated oven at 190 degrees
7. Smooth the butter and sugar together for the icing and add the milk if necessary to loosen it
8. Decorate once the cakes are out and cooled, then using a fork swirl food colouring on top to create a marble pattern
9. Serve with tea and enjoy!
